This school is one of a very large number (probably 1000 in greater London as a whole), serving a very wide range of ethnic communities, which is attempting to try and climb out of the annual scramble for basic funding. It is very difficult in the present economic and political climate.
Children attend from age 4 through to the completion of GCSE’s at 16+. Older students are prepared for GCSE in Arabic, and are given specialist teaching to help them with both English language and literature exams at GCSE. The students are entered for the examinations by their day-schools. Many of the students have done very well in their GCSE exams.
A variety of lessons are offered to the other children on a Saturday. The principal target of the school remains children of statutory school age. However, the parents who bring these children each week are offered ESOL Classes as well as sharing skills and exchanging opportunities of their own.
Almost all the children attending this school have English as an additional language, although a small but growing number have English as their first language.; A large number off parents are in receipt of income support. A great many of the children have come to know insecurity in terms of location, accommodation and schooling. This supplementary school offers additional teaching within a secure cultural framework. It aims to enable students to achieve higher levels of academic and social success in their regular schooling.
